Hello Again

This post is a tribute to my two-year hiatus from the blogging world. In the past, I’ve made dozens of promises to myself to blog regularly and exercise regularly and floss regularly. To quote my dentist, this time around I’ll just “do what I can when I can, because it’s better than nothing.”

So… onto the tribute. The last two years have been magnificent. In (roughly) chronological order: I went to Oahu, went to India, moved, got engaged, changed jobs, got married, became Mrs. Krausologer, updated my W-4, went to Maui, got a Kindle, switched to AT&T.

Being Mrs. Krausologer is nothing short of TOTALLY AWESOME, and I’m not just referring to the lower tax withholding that comes with being married. I’m referring to this abiding friendship I have with my husband, and the feelings of satisfaction and wholeness and security that come with it. Plus, he makes the best fried rice.

Changing jobs was the most stressful experience of the last two years, for several reasons. First, the change was quite drastic (I went from defense contractor to payroll processor). Secondly, I’m working for and with family, which takes some getting used to. Thirdly, the work environment and culture are completely different from what I’m accustomed to. For example, we’re in a small office, and we all sit in cubicles within twenty feet of each other. At times, I miss the privacy of an office with a door. Finally, I miss having my significant other just down the hall from me, something that was a major perk at my previous job.

But the new job has also been immensely rewarding. From the outside, payroll always sounded mundane and simple, but now that I do this for a living, I’ve come to appreciate the complexities of payroll processing, and the need to get it right and meet deadlines. I don’t like getting phone calls from frustrated clients whose employees will get evicted if that paycheck doesn’t come in on time. But it’s those phone calls that give our work urgency and meaning – someone is relying on us, so we need to deliver. And it feels great when we do.

In my next post, I’ll elaborate on getting a Kindle and switching to AT&T. Check back here for that in 2013… I’m kidding! (Hopefully.)
